Cameras Installed at Veterans Memorial Plaza

Wednesday April 06, 2016 9:33am

On or about December 11th, 2015, the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza, located at 1801 Admiral Sheehy Drive in Dubuque, was intentionally damaged by an individual(s) who drove a vehicle through the plaza and struck benches and a monument causing several thousand dollars in damage. There were no surveillance cameras in the area and there was no funding source in place to install cameras.

A local advocate for veterans had a discussion with a member of the Dubuque Drug Task Force (DDTF) about his concern for the Plaza’s security. The DDTF Control Board subsequently met and agreed to pay for security camera installation in recognition of the contributions of veterans and the significance of the monument in recognizing these contributions. The DDTF authorized the expenditure of $15,000 in forfeited drug assets for the project. The project has been completed and there are now several cameras covering the area.

The project was completed in partnership with the City of Dubuque Leisure Services Department who coordinated the installation and will maintain the cameras, and the City of Dubuque Engineering Department which added the cameras to its camera network.
